For over 35 years, Jan Koch has dedicated her career to shaping young minds in the Abbotsford School District. Currently, she works as the Learning Assistant Teacher at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. On May 5 and 6, 2025, students, staff, families, and community members gathered at W.A. Fraser Middle School for a powerful two-day art initiative honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). In collaboration with community partners, the team at W.A Fraser wanted to bring awareness to everyone about the current crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Indigenous women make up 16% of all homicide victims as well as 11% of missing women despite Indigenous women constituting 4.3% of the Canadian population (Assembly of First Nations, 2025).

Vaping is popular among youth. Daily or near-daily use can increase the risk of mental and physical health harm.

In 2023, 26 per cent of youth in grades seven-12 in British Columbia reported having vaped. The most commonly reported age B.C. youth tried their first vape was 13.

During Canada Mental Health Week, the Abbotsford School District is proud to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of our Foundry Ambassadors, a group of dedicated high school students who are helping break down the stigma around mental health through peer-led connection and support.

Throughout May, more than 700 Abbotsford School District students in grades 2, 3, 7, and 8 are taking part in an immersive civic field trip experience, designed to highlight the vital roles of local community partners and connect classroom learning to real-world careers.
