Students at Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA) Sumas campus recently embarked on a cross-grade collaboration that brought their creativity and learning to life through the Shape Monster Project.

The Abbotsford Board of Education has appointed Dr. Nathan Ngieng as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 15th. With more than 25 years of experience in B.C. public education and a proven history of leadership within Abbotsford, Dr. Ngieng is poised to guide the district’s continued commitment to innovation, equity, and student success.

Grade 4 students at Harry Sayers Elementary turned their classroom into a lively marketplace as they worked on sharpening their money skills.

With pretend coins and paper bills in hand, the students set up small shops selling various items in their classroom dollar store. They practised adding and subtracting in cents, making change, and figuring out exactly how much they could spend. Throughout the room, kids helped each other calculate costs and gave each other change with big smiles and lots of laughter.

As part of our “Celebrating Long Term Service” series, we’re proud to highlight Ms. Karen Lee, who has dedicated 36 years to teaching in the Abbotsford School District. Her story is one of deep commitment, lasting impact, and genuine care for students, families, and colleagues.

Independent reading is gaining traction at Abbotsford Traditional School, where students in grades 6, 7, and 8 recently created posters by hand or digitally to showcase books they’ve read and enjoyed. 

This initiative has helped drive a 65% increase in library circulation, with some categories seeing even greater spikes. 

With 360 students, the school is well on its way to achieving its literacy goals. Board Chair Shirley Wilson and Director of Instruction Tracy Krys were on hand to celebrate the momentum.

The fourth annual Robert Bateman Open golf tournament took place Monday, June 16^th, at Ledgeview Golf Course, bringing together local businesses, community members, Bateman alumni, and current and retired teachers and administration from the Abbotsford School District in support of the Robert Bateman Golf Academy.

The Abbotsford School District has a longstanding tradition of community partnerships, with numerous individuals and organizations dedicating countless hours to support student success. To formally acknowledge these contributions, the Board established the Community Matters Award, presented annually to those who have significantly exceeded their community service mandate and positively impacted Abbotsford School District students.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Pete Nuij as Assistant Superintendent, effective June 16, 2025.

With more than two decades of experience in public education, Pete brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to his new role. He has served as a teacher, school-based administrator, District Principal, Director of Instruction, and most recently, Associate Superintendent of Education Services with the Vancouver School Board.

The Abbotsford School District proudly honoured its 2025 retirees with a heartfelt celebration on June 5, 2025, at the Clarion Hotel. This special evening brought together colleagues, family, and friends to recognize the lasting impact of those retiring from roles across education leadership, operations, administration, teaching, and support services.
